How about teaching those in remote areas to build their own houses using either modern materials as well mud brick or other local materials.

They would be less likely to damage buildings they built themselves and would gain skills that would help them become self sufficient, as well as giving them self esteeme.

absolutely brilliant! would also be good for the rest of us too. as long as there is not too much officialdom involved, with red tape stunting creativity and thus discouraging people from having a go. Of course everything would have to be safe and usable, but beyond that, innovations to be acceptable, and perhaps there could be a system of incentives such as rewards for the best building, the cheapest, the most beautiful, the one with the most environmental elements, etc. Do you find this valuable?
