Free public transport

I believe public transport should be made free as this will have significant economic, social and enviromental effects.
currently significant infrastructure and resource is put into ticket production, validation and verification. Of course we all see the ticket inspectors on trains and at train stations seeking to catch the travellor without a ticket. This then puts pressure on the court system. Whilst the argument for this is that it is necessary to raise revenue to enable public transport to run it also eats significantly into the revenue raised.

Free public transport would most certainly have the effect of increasing the number of people who use public transport and this must reduce the number of cars on our roads. Enviromentally, fewer cars on our roads will reduce emmissions and help to positively influence global warming.

Importantly once roads become less congested, all businesses that have a legitimate reason for being on the road will immediately experience a reduction in their costs. Significant economic benefits will flow from business being able to operate more efficiently and cheaply and revenue lost can be substituted with revenue raised through greater business activity.

Courts would not have their time wasted by ridiculous cases where people are being prosecuted for not having a ticket. Court resources would then be able to be used where it is more appropriate.

Socially there will be greater numbers of people at and around public transport depots and hopefully this will reduce crime. Certainly the level of satisfaction within the community would increase.

With a lesser need for roads hopefully land clearing will also be reduced.

Great idea - I understand most transport is subsidised to a very high level anyway, up to 80% subsidy in Perth. Why not go the whole way and save the costs associated with selling and enforcing tickets.
It might just encourage more use of the system off-peak, when it is now under utilised.

i dont see this as working. transit officers dont just check tickets, they ensure safety on trains. if transits werent checking tickets, many people would find their job had become redundant, and many more people would find trains - especially off-peak - less safe. trains are already much cheaper than travelling in your own car, and often than by travelling by bus, but many people prefer not tocatch them all the same... i dont think these people would catch a train, even if it were free. i would much rather pay for my ticket, and see the service/image of publuic transport improved, than have free travel, and a less-maintained public transport system than we do currently, and i believe most commuters would agree.

Many countries provide public transport for free.
Pros:
-More public transport use, meaning less pollution, less cars on the road, more inner city parking, faster driving times.
-More demand means more buses, trains required meaning more jobs and more convenient transport times
-Save money and time with tickets, and the processes involved in selling, checking and using them.
-Less reliance on late night taxis will also decrease assaults with people relying on queuing for cabs to get home (assuming public transport is provided).

Cons:
-Govt cost increase

Just because ticket inspectors aren't required doesn't mean security is no longer required, jobs will just change, not be lost.
