political representation
Mar 11 2008, 3:53 PM EDT
New Zealand's indigenous population has had automatic representation in that country's parliament since 1867. This has meant that Maori have had input into the running of New Zealand since that year.
Why not the same for Australia's indigenous population? This could be done through the aegis of a virtual State or Territory of indigenous voters who would vote for their representatives in the Senate.
At the moment, indigenous people are, in effect, powerless at the federal level. For example: ATSIC is abolished at the whim of a whitefella government; its replacement, an advisory council, is to be, or already has been, abolished at the whim of another whitefella government; and so on. By having automatic indigenous representation in the Senate, indigenous people will have real power and input into the running of Australia for the first time ever. I believe that in the long run this would be a good thing.
