The 17% clothing tariff tax causes all our clothing to cost more. Clothing is a basic essential. The 17% clothing tariff tax should be abolished. 36  out of 54 found this valuable. Do you?

This issue rates a mention in todays newspaper. The thrust of the article is that tariffs lower welfare.

"Tariffs add 10 per cent to the cost of imported motor vehicles, while the rate on imported clothing is 17.5 per cent. Imported shoes, fabric and carpet all carry a 10 per cent tariff."

I agree that tariffs are bad... but isn't income tax essentially a tariff on locally produced goods? Goods made overseas effectively escape this cost. Yet another reason to replace income tax with GST. 3  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

Sorry, I disagree. Without some import tariff, every stitch of clothing would be imported and a lot of Australians would be out of work.

Try going through the day and find a single item that isn't imported ... it's not easy. Pretty soon, we'll need foreign aid!

I say buy Australian and keep the jobs here.

Remember when we used to have many Australian Made things in our stores... Jobs were plentiful and and Australia seemed a better place.

Sure we still have small tariffs on a few things but just remember that it is the very thing that keeps these manufacturers going. We used to manufacture almost everything here and now almost nothing. If a world recession hits and nobody wants our minerals just where will we be if we buy everything from overseas... where will our income come from?? Not from Manufacturing ... all the skilled workers are now old aged ... Nobody left to teach.

We need to increase our manufacturing... Not kill off whatever is left!
