1. RE: Embrace, accelrate use of GM crops/food
Mar 5 2008, 9:25 PM EST
In this age of plenty (for that is what it is), the only way to save the world from hunger is to distribute wealth fairly. Food is no good if it is stored in the guarded caves of Utah, or in the counting houses of Egypt (reference to the story of Joseph in the Old Testament). For instance, in Australia we produce enough wheat to feed every Australian family with 1000 tonnes per year. What do we do with the excess? - We export it so that we can increase the cash in the country to help buy all the other necessities of life. Again, the issue is one of economic and political exploitation. GM is good for Monsanto et al. As to its benefit to anyone else, I suggest you read about Pottinger's cats. (I will add a reference to Pottinger if anyone asks for it) 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

GM food can have significant negative consequences. It should be treated with great care.

we could save the world from world hunger if we all went vegetarian....we would only use less than one quarter of the land we are now using to breed millions of livestock that don't need to be here as humans can survive on the food we are feeding the cows and pigs and chickens....then we don't have to even go near a rediculous idea of gm crops

"we could save the world from world hunger if we all went vegetarian"OK, let's be realistic here - which is more serious option: 1) Allow GM foods to potentially create another green revolution; or 2) Get every single person on the planet to stop eating meat. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. A far better option, imo is to start focusing on maintaining sustainable population growth. In Australian this is largely an immigration issue. Cheers, Dale 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Food is no good if it is stored in the guarded caves of Utah, or in the counting houses of Egypt (reference to the story of Joseph in the Old Testament).70% of that wheat goes to feed animals that are bred in inhumane circumstances who have no voice, who also don't need no be here to feed every australian as every australian can live off a vegetarian diet...I agree the only way is distrubute all of our valuable resources evenly in the world...and it should start with the grain being distrubuted evenly to HUMANS and stop breeding billions of animals who don't even need to be here and eating our grain! Share and be compassionate to all beings is the answer here, not GM crops 0 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |
