Allow people to receive money for organ donations
Mar 2 2008, 7:31 PM EST
This was here before but seems to have been removed... not sure why - it was better than the obligatory donation idea, which implies that your body belongs to the state.I think people should be allowed to sell their organs after death... money would be a great motivator in increasing organ donations, and would help people financially cope with death of a loved one. Organ donation can save multiple lives - shouldn't the donor be able to get some money to pay for their funeral? 14 out of 31 found this valuable. Do you?

On the contrary organ recipients are based on a waiting list of need, time waiting and compatibility so being rich has no impact. If that were true the current system would mean only the rich could afford the organs and the poor die rich. By increasing the donor rate then everyone would get one. By introducing a financial incentive it is win/win. Not only do the patient's benefit directly, but other patients will also benefit by the freed up hospital beds, staff and equipment. On top of this the recipients can then also continue to work and contribute to the work place and their families. Then lastly the government would also benefit due to the decrease in healthcare costs needed to help support the hundreds of thousands of patients with organ failure, especially with diabetic renal failure continually on the rise.Simple incentives like a tax rebate, once off payment when opting-in or at donation towards funeral expenes.
