The Votes are now Tainted
Feb 28 2008, 9:17 AM EST I think some of the subjects on this site have become tainted by flood votes within the last 24 hours. A select few topics have suddenly received roughly 100 votes in a very short time (considering the current overall level of participation across the site). I doubt the sudden "popularity" of these topics is due to large numbers of people agreeing with them. I propose that the current votes for all topics be returned to zero, and some sort of restriction put into place as to who can vote. Either require a name, email address validation and CAPTCHA, or even full site registration, so that each person can only vote once per topic. With the current system, it doesn't take much to clear cookies and revote on a topic more than 100 times! 10 out of 13 found this valuable. Do you? |

Feb 28 2008, 5:33 PM EST Well, I do my best. A cookie is placed on one's computer, but if they choose to erase it, then there's not a lot to keep them from doing it again. It's a wiki, so we're on the honor system. Also, if you're a registered user, you can make changes and police the site yourself. That's what a wiki is all about. It's user-generated and administered. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Feb 29 2008, 6:25 PM EST I agree ... the votes have been totally tainted ... some are up in the 100s for the most ratbag comments. So, how can a registered user police a topic? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: The Votes are now Tainted
Feb 29 2008, 11:22 PM EST I think ozideas needs to set certain members as Moderators before they can do things like that (I had a quick read through the help files in Wetpaint). Not sure if this would give the required permission to change such things like zeroing tainted votes though. A more preventative system does need to be in place though, to stop these things from happening. It'll be too difficult to filter the real ideas from the problem ones when the time comes to submit the petition. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
