2. RE: Trade not aid
Mar 5 2008, 10:26 PM EST
This probably won't help in countries with ramped corruption since the kleptocracts will still get their money. Also, the extremely poor in these countries don't own land to farm or may not be employed. What they produce may be in very small quantities. Trade is only useful in large quantities and hence only the rich farmers or large collective organisation can pool the produce of many small producers to make trade efficient. Instead, maybe if aid is given, it should be conditional. We should demand these countries implement (simple, low-cost, well-thought out) schemes that increase transparency and accountability for their aid. It's almost like a trade, tangible goods for our intangible services. We give them aid, and they have to buy and use our anti-corruption self-help kit. 3 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |
