When a product or service is prohibited if there is still sufficient demand for it, it is provided by the black market at an inflated price. Often this is a price beyond that which potential customers can afford to pay for through legitimate employment, so they must take to crime to pay for their desires.

This is an area in which the entire world has failed to learn from the history of alcohol prohibition in the U.S.

Additionally with regard to firearms, it is critical to public safety that individuals, particularly the frail and elderly, have access to the tools to defend themselves with.

There is something to be said for much of this argument ... but the last bit is bullshit. Australia is one of the safest countries in the world now BECAUSE of the war on guns.

However, smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol are major health issues ... maybe they should ban treatment for people who "self-inflict" these substances ... no lung or liver transplants for habitual smokers and drinkers.

Thankfully, smoking is way down in many segments since the ban on smoking in clubs, pubs, etc.

Hahahaha....mate, honestly what are you on about? This country has NEVER had a gun problem. Our rate of homicide has been declining steadily since the 1960's and even the ABS &AIC are now questioning the value of registration and the buyback.

Be careful, don't jump to poor assumptions.

I have read studies in the past that indicate this is rubbish. It is intuitively correct that less guns equals a safer society. It has been backed up by research.

Cheers, Dale

The fact that crime flourishes in the wake of the prohibition of a popular product, such as alcohol, is not sufficient reason in itself to justify ending the prohibition. Organised crime in the US did not end with the repeal of prohibition. It continued to flourish by attaching itself to the corporatocracy, taking over control of businesses and unions and funding selected congressmen to serve its ends.

Prohibition was the wrong tool for the job of controlling the adverse effects of excess alcohol consumption, it simply changed them from uncontrolled to uncontrollable. For the same reason the total prohibition on other recreational drugs is counterproductive. The consumption of prescription drugs is controlled and presents few problems, so a similar control over cannabis, cocaine and heroin would be far less expensive and far more effective than the present, American inspired, system of prohibition.

The US "war on drugs", like the "war on terror", is just a way for corporate America to control third world countries and maintain the highly profitable armaments industry.

In Australia there is no war on prostitution, gambling or guns, simply control systems that are more or less effective, depending on the administration of the controls.
