I agree. The figures I have seen indicate that decriminalizing drugs and hence reducing their market value will have a significant impact of crime rates of all types.

On which part? Addicts need to finance their addiction, often without holding down a paid job. This pushes them towards crime or immoral acts which they normally would not of considered. A variety of figures are available (depending on methodology used) that show a strong connection between drug use/abuse and criminal behaviour. Regulating common illicite drugs stops drug dealers charging high prices for their drugs and drug users are able to access consistent quantities of drugs which prevents the drug overdoses which can occur because of variable quality of drugs on the streets. Drug use is not enforcible. When someone is experimenting with drugs they are unlikely to be worried about being caught by police. Hence making drug use illegal is a pointless activity. People who want to take drugs will take drugs and people who are smart enough not to will not start taking them because they legal. The best defence against drug abuse is education and regulation. This is analogous to parenting styles. A parent who lays down the law in the house and uses punishment to keep their children in line just send a message to their children that they should not get caught. A more effective parenting style is to keep the dialoge open and to give the child guidence but still to let the child make their own choice. This later style has been confirmed as superior by studies. It is the same with government policy. By making drug taking behaviour illegal we are segregating a group of people in society and creating a gap in communication between society and these people on this topic. There is a lot of literature on this topic. Most logical papers written seem to favour regulating drug use. However it is politically sensitive due to the amount of ignorance on the topic in the general population. Cheers, Dale Do you find this valuable? |

To add on to Dra Red's point parentign and style used to discipline children may not be just the only way to send messages to their children. Several children from good families (what I mean is families with no issues/problems that is in any way effecting children's mental health) still find their way into drugs. Knowingly or unknowingly they are introduced to such substances in school/colleges by thier friends where in such habit develop and parents come into the picture when the child is using drugs in full force. To stop such usage several factors must be considered such as the type of school, TV programs watched and even the friends circle your child is mingling with. Nithya Suffering from an addiction.
