Set the minimum wage regionally
Feb 26 2008, 11:56 PM EST The cost of living varies by region. And the state of the labour market also varys by region. A minimum wage in one part of the country might provide a meagre existance whilst in another parts of the nation the same minimum wage might create unemployment. With some remote communities today suffering unemployment well above 20%. The government body that determines minimum wages should also set a formula by where the national minimum wage is reduced in some regions that suffer high unemployment and/or have a below average cost of living. The ABS would need to provide the necessary unemployment data on a postcode by postcode basis. 38 out of 52 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Set the minimum wage regionally
Feb 27 2008, 12:44 AM EST We'd be much better off doing away with minimum wage laws altogether. They're a barrier to jobs creation, forcing people out of the workforce (ironically only those people such laws were originally intended to help). Paragons of socialist virtue such as the Scandinavian countries can get along just fine without minimum wage laws, why can't we? 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Feb 27 2008, 3:30 AM EST Indeed, people who would earn less than the minimum wage in it's absence are simply out of a job when it's introduced. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Set the minimum wage regionally
Mar 10 2008, 3:19 PM EDT I agree with the above comments with some reservations though. It is basically being suggested that market forces are used to determine individual wages. However, market forces can be seen to frequently fail to produce fair pay and conditions. I believe workers accept poor conditions because they are not fully aware of the standards. If this information was more freely available, then it would aid people in finding the best conditions they can. To be clear, I am suggesting that employment conditions, including pay, are regularly measured and made avilable on the net or by phone. This would allow someone who was accepting worse conditions to be informed of this and make the move to a better work environment. This set up would make it harder for employers to abuse the power they have over some staff. cheers, Dale 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
