Free Immigration Agreements
Feb 26 2008, 8:18 AM EST
Australia has a free immigration agreement with New Zealand where by any New Zealander can fly into Australia and reside as a permanent resident and Australians can fly to New Zealand and do the same. The Australian government should work to strike similar agreements with other nations that have similar political institutions (rule of law) and similar economic circumstances. Examples might include Ireland, Singapore or Canada.

I like this idea in principle, but I think you'd have to be pretty careful. I suppose if it's like the New Zealand arrangement, then we could still deny access on character grounds.I think we need to allow more "visiting workers" too - specifically unskilled labour from pacific islands. 6 out of 11 found this valuable. We currently have a Working Visa reciprocal agreement with the USA. Which means, for every US citizen that comes to work here, we can send an Aussie to work in the USA. Apparently, no-one has yet taken up the offer to go to the US...

I like the idea but how could we implement such a scheme without being branded as racist? To do it with English speaking countries (can we call Canada English speaking?) but not with non-English speaking countries just seems bigoted. It would be very delicate to organise such a thing but would have lots of benefits if ever done though. I think it was easier with NZ as we have a long history of co-operation.

Singapore does include English as an official language but it is one of four official languages. I don't know how suggesting Irealand, Singapore and Canada is racist. The policy is not racist as race is not one of the criteria. Of course Japan would not sign such a deal with Australia because Japan is racist when it comes to immigration. However that is there decision not ours.

The government will not facilitate free immigration anytime soon. What can change is immigration detention policies which currently have instances of holding refugee children for years before properly handling their cases. The Rudd administration has an appaling track record of denying aaplications for Asylum Seekers (a rejection rate of 97.6 per cent.). - http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,23659947-953,00.html. these rejections include justifiable cases of asylum seekers fleeing war torn countries liek Iraq and Afghanistan.
