Include Dental under Medicare
Feb 21 2008, 2:43 PM EST
Australians teeth are getting worse, and part of the reason is that it costs so much to get a dental check-up only the rich are willing to spend the money. Dental services (at least check-ups and small procedures as fillings) should be covered under Medicare, as are most GP services. And not the system where one can only get into a government-funded dentist in cases of emergency, or else get placed on a waiting list for several years. All normal dentists should be able to make Medicare claims. EVERYONE should have the right to healthy teeth, not just the wealthy.

I really agree with this idea. Even with top extras cover I avoid going to the dentist because it costs so much. I have a dental abcess at the bottom of a root canal filled tooth, I need to see an endodontist ,but can't afford the cost even, though I am employed. Perhaps the government could think of low interest loans , so people could have necessary expensive work done and then gradually pay it back.

This will probably be included already, if we don't see Medicare expanded in the upcoming budget anyway. Nevertheless, it's an excellent idea. There have been studies showing that proper dental care improves overall health, so it makes sense that preventive dentistry should be covered. Let private cover manage the extras, just like we do in other areas of health.

Like most socialised medicine, this will just cause waiting lists.

Maybe an additional 1% on the Medicare levy would offset the cost.
