Why doesn't the government buy the fully operational Mitsubishi engine plant and hand it over to the CSIRO and a few engineering universities? It could be use to develope universal engines that run on alternative fuels to be shared among the car makers. Special focus could be given to turbo diesel, ethanol and hyrdogen.

Replace all Commonwealth cars with full plug-in electric cars, tendered from GMH, Ford or Toyota. That's like 50,000 vehicles. Watch how fast the cost comes down and production is ramped up. This will filter down to the States and finally the public.

| Randall_Berger | LOW FOOD MILES | 4 | Apr 18 2008, 9:05 PM EDT by drwoood | |||
|
Thread started: Feb 26 2008, 6:53 PM EST
Watch
‘Food Miles’ is an insidious cost and pollution component that is not factored into the price of our vast selection of food. We tend to not care if our food comes from a farm outside of town or across the entire continent. This dollar cost is often amortised across the board, but the pollution of long haul trucks, etc. is still there. Food Miles should be noted on all products ... must as whether or not a product is Australian or imported … so those who care about the environment and local producers can make an informed choice. Yes, the labels are getting bigger as more and more information is added … Fat, Sugar, GM, GI, Gluten Free, Dolphin safe … but if people are informed, they can act.

| trobbo1 | Free public transport | 2 | Apr 18 2008, 3:00 AM EDT by Anonymous | |||
|
Thread started: Mar 13 2008, 8:04 PM EDT
Watch
I believe public transport should be made free as this will have significant economic, social and enviromental effects.
currently significant infrastructure and resource is put into ticket production, validation and verification. Of course we all see the ticket inspectors on trains and at train stations seeking to catch the travellor without a ticket. This then puts pressure on the court system. Whilst the argument for this is that it is necessary to raise revenue to enable public transport to run it also eats significantly into the revenue raised. Free public transport would most certainly have the effect of increasing the number of people who use public transport and this must reduce the number of cars on our roads. Enviromentally, fewer cars on our roads will reduce emmissions and help to positively influence global warming. Importantly once roads become less congested, all businesses that have a legitimate reason for being on the road will immediately experience a reduction in their costs. Significant economic benefits will flow from business being able to operate more efficiently and cheaply and revenue lost can be substituted with revenue raised through greater business activity. Courts would not have their time wasted by ridiculous cases where people are being prosecuted for not having a ticket. Court resources would then be able to be used where it is more appropriate. Socially there will be greater numbers of people at and around public transport depots and hopefully this will reduce crime. Certainly the level of satisfaction within the community would increase. With a lesser need for roads hopefully land clearing will also be reduced.

| PacShady | Fit Cars With GPS-Based Speed Limiting Devices | 5 | Mar 29 2008, 6:01 AM EDT by Andy38 | |||
|
Thread started: Mar 25 2008, 7:06 PM EDT
Watch
It's clear that people have a major problem with keeping to the speed limit, and no matter how great the punishment or how high the fine is for speeding, idiots will continue to break the law and put others at risk. Fact is, for punishment to be effective it needs to be delivered each and every time unwanted behaviour occurs, which is just not possible without having a speed camera on every street (which would cost billions, possibly trillions).
The technology exists now that cars can be fitted with computer devices which use GPS to determine what the speed limit is on the current section of road the vehicle is on, and lock the top end speed to that maximum. I propose that all new cars sold in Australia have these devices fitted as standard, rigged in such a way that any tampering will either lock the car down outright (not move anywhere), or lock to have a maximum speed of 60km/h, to prevent the worst of these road criminals from circumventing the system. I also propose that the Government allow a rebate/subsidy and reward system for all older cars to have the same system fitted, for instance give all those who retrofit their cars with the device an extra three years free on their licence, or $200 free fuel, or 1 year free rego, etc. to encourage all Australians to retrofit the system to their cars.

Make it a law that oil companies must fix their prices weekly, Monday to Sunday. Fix the price at Singapore's level, as they do now, as it was the Thursday before. That way everyone knows what the price will be in advance and can plan likewise. The oil companies will no longer be able to fleece us. Only governments can make laws. Once their made they must be obeyed.

| Randall_Berger | Remove Excise From Renewable Fuels | 5 | Mar 14 2008, 7:59 PM EDT by Randall_Berger | |||
|
Thread started: Feb 19 2008, 11:33 PM EST
Watch
The government should remove all or some of the excise on transport fuels that contain renewable, Australian-made, farm grown biofuels, like biodiesel and ethanol. Just tickle the ol' hip pocket nerve and watch how fast Australian motorists turn green! Not only do biofuels help the environment, but support Australian industry and the rural sector. They burn cleaner, are for the most part carbon neutral and can actually improve performance. They are made from farm products like sugar cane and canola. All unleaded vehicles an use E10 (10% ethanol blend). This means one tank in 10 grows on trees. 10% is better than zero. Some flexible fuel cars are coming out that will use up to E85, like the new SAAB. All diesel vehicles can use B20 (20% biodiesel blend) or B100 (100% pure vege diesel), though you made need a filter change eventually, as biodiesel tends to clean out the engine. With B20, 1 tank in 5 was a planted on a farm 200 days ago. With B100, your car is now a vegetarian and an Australian farmer is singing your praises. So is Mother nature. You don't have to wait to do this. You can start the next time you fill up your petrol or diesel car or truck, be it a Mini or a Kenny. For more information, you can look on www.conservo.com.au

Most people cannot afford new cars (without going into debt). If the government wants to reduce our use of fossil fuels then the replacement of old engines with diesel, low consumption, engines in existing cars may be an option. In the future, bio diesel could be used in these engines.

Require all new cars in the Commonwealth fleet to be either electric or hybrid powered so as to encourage large scale production and thus bring down the price. It would help if these vehicles were GST-free for the first few years to encourage the public to choose them over internal combustion powered vehicles.
Electric vehicles are already available in Australia, according to The Age: http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/electric-car-uses-sun-to-show-watts-driving-the-future/2008/02/14/1202760494735.html

How about Trains that actually run in NSW?
They just cut 4 trains during peak hour to the mountains in Sydney. If you've got the misfortune of having to catch an existing one, you'd know that they're insanely packed with people as it is. How is everyone supposed to fit into even less trains?... Public transport is important - I don't own a car, and busses to the city just aren't as efficient. Lets see more trains and some actual spending on developing a working rail network that functions in a passable manner outside the just the eastern suburbs.

| NomdeClavier | Reduce tax deductions for cars | 2 | Feb 23 2008, 8:58 AM EST by Anonymous | |||
|
Thread started: Feb 20 2008, 9:00 PM EST
Watch
Our tax system encourages people to drive cars by offering tax deductions for salary-packaged cars. What's more, you get a bigger tax deduction if you drive your car more!
Current laws encourage the use of cars as the main form of commuting. They also encourage people to increase the number of kilometres they drive so that they can maximise their deduction. The tax laws should be changed to remove tax deductions on vehicles that are not used for business purposes. Removing tax deductions for cars may encourage people to look for alternative forms of transport, reduce the number of cars on the road and reduce pollution in our cities.

Government support should be directed a supporting local manufacture of a light weight, short distance (100 km) 4 seater that recharges in 5 or 6 hours.
While this would push the energy requirements back on the power grid, it would better enable pollution control and make suburban and city streets quieter and safer.
