Open up rail as an alternative to aircraft travel between this route... of course we'd have to make sure to aviod potential railway crossing disasters.

Why doesn't the government buy the fully operational Mitsubishi engine plant and hand it over to the CSIRO and a few engineering universities? It could be use to develope universal engines that run on alternative fuels to be shared among the car makers. Special focus could be given to turbo diesel, ethanol and hyrdogen.

Anonymous Abolish $300000 licence fees for operating a taxi 10 May 9 2008, 2:12 PM EDT by Sympneology

It is ridiculous that somebody wanting to operate a taxi should have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a licence. This artificially restricts the supply of taxis. This licencing system should be abolished.

Replace all Commonwealth cars with full plug-in electric cars, tendered from GMH, Ford or Toyota. That's like 50,000 vehicles. Watch how fast the cost comes down and production is ramped up. This will filter down to the States and finally the public.

Randall_Berger LOW FOOD MILES 4 Apr 18 2008, 9:05 PM EDT by drwoood

Thread started: Feb 26 2008, 6:53 PM EST  Watch

‘Food Miles’ is an insidious cost and pollution component that is not factored into the price of our vast selection of food.

We tend to not care if our food comes from a farm outside of town or across the entire continent. This dollar cost is often amortised across the board, but the pollution of long haul trucks, etc. is still there.

Food Miles should be noted on all products ... must as whether or not a product is Australian or imported … so those who care about the environment and local producers can make an informed choice.

Yes, the labels are getting bigger as more and more information is added … Fat, Sugar, GM, GI, Gluten Free, Dolphin safe … but if people are informed, they can act.
