It's a waste of money, and is counter-productive - pushing people into crime and prostitution.

Most of our constitution deals with what rights and responsibilties our governments have and the legal rights of Corporations. Inferred/implicit rights are of no use to anyone except lawyers and Qc's when it comes time to argue in the courts on your own behalf. It's about time we had a constitution that explicitly outlines what human rights we have in this country.

I would like to see each State of Australia have the same laws and regulations. As an example each State has their own Police Force. Still keeping the same Police Force in each State but let it be administered from Canberra as a Branch of the Federal Police. There are so many different things between States today its common sence to put some of these things under a national banner.

| Sympneology | License the purchase of alcohol | 4 | Mar 17 2008, 12:54 AM EDT by Sympneology | |||

One can only own a gun in Australia if one has a licence for it. One can only sell alcohol in Australia if one has a licence to do so. One can only drive a motor vehicle in Australia if one has the appropriate licence. One can only run a radio or TV station in Australia if one has acquired a licence to do so. All these restrictions on our liberty to do what we want when we want, but where are the people marching on the streets?
Why could we not apply this principle to the acquisition as well as the sale of alcohol? Anyone over the age of 18 who wants it can get a licence, which must be shown when purchasing alcohol, and as long as they act responsibly they can keep it. If they act irresponsibly their licence can be suspended or cancelled. Of course there will be those who try to get around their suspension by asking a licensed drinker to buy grog for them, just as Aborigines used to ask whites to buy liquor for them when they were banned from hotels, but anyone who acceded to this request would be endangering their own licence, as would the hotelier who sold to an unlicensed drinker. Many people would protest, at first, at the suggestion that they could not be trusted to drink responsibly, but when it was pointed out that the same could be said of car drivers, hoteliers or gun owners they would see the sense of it. As to the additional paperwork, we have computers to do all that now.

The government go in and take alcohol out of indigenous communities where they think it is a problem...why not take it out of all communities...just in my family alone there is alcohol abuse that have ruined relations and kids...and I would not be the only Australian who says this...Shouldn't we be willing to give up all alcolol for all the families in Australia and just not have it...or at the very least label every bottle with a warning like the cigarette packets..it's not just indigenous families that suffer....it's most of Australia! Unfortunately I grew up thinking alcohol was relaxing, cool, and connected it to a sensational time...and I started heavily drinking at 14 years of age...I am now 37 and look to see that idea is just thriving on our youth! We all aspire to be alcoholics in Australia, and we are role modelling this to our children. Nothing is changing...Something should be done about this...but money is much more important than health!

Its easy, by challenging Australias worst enemy we win. I had a belief for years that by planning a network of inland seas, channelled from the ocean so they go through a natural desalination process Australia will, over a period of extended time cure more than just its droughts and farming problems. Where there is water, there is life. Birds and animals thrive, grass grows and the presence of large water bodies creates water carrying weather. A massive project that could only be tackled by country that would be wanting to change from rim dwellers to having thriving agricultural pastures, inland cities and shipping ports bringing massive employment opportunities across the board.

| IanGo | Re-establish independence from commercial interests | 0 | Mar 3 2008, 7:56 AM EST by IanGo | |||

Most fundamental to our society is information - the ABC and SBS need proper funding, to restore our access to authoritative, unbiased sources which provide a proper spread of ideas and opinion - unlike commercial media.
Provide greatly increased funding for pure research in our universities - so that research can again operate in topics that have no commercial gain. Also restore the research and development, and investment tax subsidies for Australian companies, so they are assisted to establish themselves - and to be independent of overseas companies for information and techniques.
Restore the rights (and even the responsibilities) of CSIRO and other scientists to again speak out on issues freely, and establish this as an essential source of information in a democratic society, even when contrary to government opinion. |

All the rules that restrict the operation of casinos and gambling just serve to enrich those that do own "government permitted" venues. People like Jamie Packer don't need the government to assist them in their business ventures by making competition illegal. Anybody should be allowed to open a casion and everybody who wishes to do so should be dealth with on equal terms.
