I am a very concerned Aboriginal woman who has been fighting for victims of sexual abuse in our community. My mother and I have been to court with victims and supported them through the process of standing up. These victims are sometimes condemed by others in the community and their own families because of coming forward. The Liberal Government made out we were not doing anything in our community. We participated in the sexual abuse task force consultation through Attorney Generals Department. We went to Government representatives with our concerns particularly that only 1% of sexual assualt cases are won in court. Out of how many of that 1% plead guilty is what Im particularly interested in and the other 99% plead not guilty and get away with it. So Governement and perpertrators would know if you plead NOT GUILTY it is very likely you will get away with it. What I think is more people need to be made aware of the system not supporting our people when they do come forward. Seeing them go through the heart ache and pain only to know there is only a 1% chance you will win.

I would like to see a combined University study undertaken by aboriginals and newcomers, in consultation with elders, into the relevance of the Dreaming and the Holy Sites. I was given the gift of experiencing the Dreaming when up north, and found that they were more than just stories. I heard stories that I could use to relate to incidents in my own life, to help me make decisions and understand who I was. I also heard stories that gave broad historic and geological information that gave a pretty good overview of the world, or at the very least, this section of it. I heard stories of The Son of the Father, the White God in the Sky who walks beside the River of Healing, of how a character called The Good Shepherd came to rescue his people in trouble, and of at least two holy sites connected with these stories. All this is valuable to an Australian spirituality which shies away from organised structural religion and I believe much can be gained from such a study. Sure, ANY group could do such a study, but I feel that there are quite a few aboriginal people with university degrees who could use their specialist knowledge to bridge the gap between all the rest of us. Those of us with more simpler approaches to life and spirituality will have already found it, as I have.

How about teaching those in remote areas to build their own houses using either modern materials as well mud brick or other local materials.
They would be less likely to damage buildings they built themselves and would gain skills that would help them become self sufficient, as well as giving them self esteeme. |
